Jess Hurrell, bathroom

Jess Hurrell (bathroom)

Luxurious and glamorous with metallic touches. The off-black walls, brass taps and statement tiles were a bit of a shock for decorators, but the finished result is a bold and stylish space that works for all the family.

Laura Burkitt (kitchen)

Laura Burkitt (kitchen)

An industrial-chic renovation won best kitchen for Laura, sparking a new career in styling too. Now, the open-plan kitchen extends into the garden, creating a New York-style loft living space in north-west London.

Stephanie Savvides-Howell (living room)

Stephanie Savvides-Howell (living room)

Stephanie won best living room at last year’s London Home Design Awards for her big and bold styling. Reflected rays off a brushed brass sideboard, a striking chandelier and wall spots ensure there is plenty of light.

Emilie Mauran (bedroom)

Emilie Mauran (bedroom)

French-born Emilie was inspired by hotel bedrooms but wanted something more personal for her own space. Light pinks and greens on walls have a calming feel.

Simon Hurst (garden)

Simon Hurst (garden)

Simon's south-facing garden is a "secluded oasis" in which larger shrubs give height while shade-loving ferns at a lower level create a tiered effect. A big mirror at the far end cleverly hints at another garden beyond.

Judging day at Sketch
London 2019

Our panel of expert judges

Our panel of expert judges includes Janice Morley, editor of Homes & Property; Dan Hopwood, former president of the British Institute of Interior Design; and award-winning design writer Barbara Chandler. Joining them are design journalist and author of Mad About The House Kate Watson-Smyth; Marianne Shillingford, the creative director of Dulux; Thomas Sanderson Product Manager, Laura O’Connell; and interior designer and TV presenter Sophie Robinson. Judging will aptly take place at Sketch, London’s most Instagrammable restaurant, on 3 June in the recently redesigned Lecture Room & Library.

Here’s what the judges are looking for

We are looking for colour flair, careful use of space and clever materials – and practicality. Rooms that really work for those who use them most. Barbara Chandler, one of this year’s expert judges, is looking forward to see the real-life homes of our readers and says “personal is the key word”. Clever use of craft and DIY skills, along with adventurous product sourcing, will also be commended.

“Where does everything come from? From markets and charity shops, the high street and DIY superstores to auctions and high-end design boutiques. They all yield items that can make a room unique, a testimony to budgeting, knowledge, determination and resourcefulness," says Chandler. “So good luck to all our wonderful design devotees – and please make sure you tell us everything that makes your entry special."
